The importance of substitutes in football has increased along with the number of substitutions now permitted by the laws of the game. More than ever, games can be won and lost by substitutes. At the same time, the role of the substitute has always been an important one to consider, particularly at grassroots level, where development and enjoyment can rival the scoreline as an indicator of success.

In this presentation, Sammy Lander – who pioneered the role of substitution coach with EFL club AFC Wimbledon – looks at how coaches and substitutes can be more deliberate with their approach, in order to create more consistent and effective substitutions. This includes psychological and social pillars, helping to reframe the connotations of being a substitute, in order to bring about more effective performance in the role.
