In this session filmed exclusively for CV Academy, Watford lead Under-21 coach Charlie Daniels oversees a series of practices designed to develop the ability to play under pressure.

The first practice – led by assistant coach Dan Gosling – is an unopposed, technical passing pattern. With a focus on pass detail, scanning and speed of play, it is designed to get the players technically and mentally prepared for the games that follow.

Next is a small-sided game, with ​​a scoring system and adaptations that encourage the players to adjust in order to have success when playing under pressure. The final practice is a 7v7 possession-versus-press game, played in a small area, where the in-possession players are pressed intensely. In order to score points, they must look for quick combinations, switches of play or to break lines, as well as implementing an effective reaction press on defensive transitions.

It is an excellent session, delivered by two knowledgeable coaches with years of Premier League experience between them. Daniels and Gosling provide clarity on the key details that will enable players – and teams – to play through, around or over pressure. We hope you enjoy the session!
