League One leaders Wigan Athletic had the longest unbeaten run in the division (11 games) when they arrived at Roots Hall, presenting Southend United manager Chris Powell with his biggest test since taking the reins at the end of January. An early goal from Michael Turner gave the home side the perfect start before former Wigan striker, Marc-Antoine Fortuné ensured Southend took a two-goal lead in to half time. Wigan briefly threatened a comeback with a goal mid-way through the second half but Michael Kightly scored Southend's third late on, to put Powell in the history books as the first permanent Southend manager to win his first three games in charge.
