Manning started out as a coach in the academy at Ipswich Town, where he had previously spent a season as a player – and then enjoyed a spell as Under-23 manager at West Ham, where he helped shape the development of players including Declan Rice and Grady Diangana. He then left to head up the academy at New York City FC before joining Belgian team Lommel, another club owned by the City Football Group, in his first role as a manager.

In this fascinating hour-long session, he gives an introduction to his methodology before presenting his principles on how to beat the medium block – something he faced a lot in his first season at Lommel. He focuses on creating overloads in various areas of the pitch, explaining how he works to establish numerical superiorities from a deep build and demonstrating some of the practices he uses to develop his team’s ability in this exact area.
