In the second special extended version of our popular Masterclass series, exclusive to CV Academy, we sit down with former Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell.
Caldwell became Wigan manager in April 2015, at the age of 31 and while still registered as a player at the club. Unable to save the team from relegation to League One in the final few games of the 2014/15 season, he went about rebuilding the squad and successfully led them back to the Championship, as League One winners, at the first time of asking.
In this fascinating feature, Caldwell gives us a deep insight into his processes in the aftermath of relegation, the style of football he wanted to implement and how he looked to set his team up in a new division. Using training-ground footage, match highlights and the Coaches’ Voice tactics board, he focuses in on a selection of key games from the promotion season, and explains the tactical adaptations he made to counter the problems his team faced at various stages of a long season.
It’s a brilliant insight into the challenges faced by head coaches not just at this level, but throughout the football pyramid. We hope you enjoy it.
