In this coaching clinic filmed exclusively for CV Academy, Jenny Sugarman, most recently head coach at West Bromwich Albion Women, describes a session she would put on to develop her team’s ability to lock the opposition into an area of the pitch.

The session, explained in detail by Sugarman on the Coaches’ Voice tactics board, is split into three practices. The first is a 2v2 pressing box, in which players work on the key technical details of the session. This then leads into a 6v6 possession game in which the defensive team must try to lock their opponents into two lanes of a three-lane pitch. The final practice is a 9v9 small-sided game used to coach the same principles over a bigger area, with the defending team now attempting to confine their opponents to three of five lanes.
