In this coaching clinic filmed exclusively for CV Academy, Huddersfield Town first-team coach Jimmy Shan discusses the principles he employs when coaching his teams how to switch play, and then introduces a typical session he would deliver on the same theme.

Using the 3-4-3 formation, Shan begins by underlining the key objective of playing forward at all times – on the ball side if possible, but if not then by changing the point of attack with a switch in play. Here, he explains the ways in which a team playing in a 3-4-3 can use the centre-backs and two midfielders to execute a switch of play from one wing-back to the other. He then progresses into discussing how those switches can bring the two number 10s and central forward into play in attacking areas, with the ultimate aim of penetrating the opposing back line and creating chances.

In the second part of the clinic, Shan describes a session he would put on to develop a team’s ability to switch play effectively against various opposition blocks and formations. It begins with a technical passing practice, before moving on to a conditioned possession practice in which the coached team must aim to score in any of four mini-goals – two placed centrally at the far end of the practice, and two facing the touchline in wide areas. The final practice is a themed 11v11 in which the coached team must always have played through at least one wide channel before taking a shot on goal; this is to encourage switches of play, which are provoked by an opposition set up to stay compact in central areas.
