In this session filmed exclusively for CV Academy, Brighton Under-18 goalkeeping coach Owen Fisher takes three goalkeepers through a series of practices that prepares them for their upcoming matches, while working on key principles related to the position.

After a goalkeeper-specific warm-up and activation session led by strength and conditioning coach Calum Brashill, Fisher and assistant coach James Granger take the keepers through four practices. This starts with an unopposed technical practice in which the keepers work on some of the passing patterns their teams might look to use in upcoming games. This moves into a technical handling practice in which the keepers work on what the coaches term their ‘brilliant basics’. There follows a shot-stopping practice that works the keepers in 1v1 situations and decision-making, and another that focuses on how they deal with crosses and cutbacks. Finally, two of the three keepers join a full Under-18s session, and play in an 11v11 that focuses on the team’s build-up from the back.

It’s a fascinating and substantial session that gives a real insight into how one of the game’s most respected academies is developing their young goalkeepers. We hope you enjoy it!
