In this session filmed exclusively for CV Academy, Wolves U15/U16 youth phase lead coach Wes Hughes takes his players through a series of practices designed to develop their counter-attacking play.

The session starts with a topic-relevant warm-up led by academy sport scientist Jake Reeve, before progressing into a breakout game that includes a high number of 2v1 counter-attacking situations. The second practice is an attacking and defending wave game that features repeated 4v3 situations in attacking transition, and which demands high-intensity sprinting over large vertical distances. The session, which Hughes leads alongside youth phase coach Darius Vassell, ends with a small-sided directional game that brings the counter-attacking principles worked on through the earlier practices into a more game-like situation.

It’s another really enlightening and well-delivered session that gives a great insight into the coaching being done at the Wolves Academy. We hope you enjoy it!
